France, drug trafficking generates 2.7 billion euros a year

The drug trade in France generates an economic activity worth about 2.7 billion euros per year, equivalent to more than 0.1 points of GDP, the French National Institute of Statistics (Insee) announced today, .

“Of these 2.7 billion euros, one billion euros are generated by cannabis traffic and 800 million euros from cocaine traffic,” Insee said.

According to Insee, based on data from the Inter-Ministerial Anti-Drugs Mission (Mildeca) based on family surveys, drug consumption in France is estimated to be 3.1 billion euros a year.

The Eurostat Institute had asked member states in 2013 to integrate drug trafficking and prostitution into their national statistics, considering it was a free trade transaction.
